AAA Endovascular Graft Repair: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Procedure
AAA endovascular graft repair, known as TAVR, involves inserting a replacement valve through a catheter to treat aortic aneurysms. This minimally invasive procedure offers a promising alternative to traditional open surgery.
TAVR reduces surgical risks and shortens recovery time, making it a preferred option for patients deemed high-risk for open surgery or those seeking less invasive treatment for aortic aneurysms.
Patients undergo imaging tests such as CT scans to assess the size, location, and morphology of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and plan the procedure.
Anesthesia is administered to ensure patient comfort during the procedure. This may involve general anesthesia or conscious sedation.
A small incision is made in the groin area, and a catheter is inserted into the femoral artery and advanced to the site of the AAA under fluoroscopic guidance.
The endovascular graft, typically made of fabric and metal stents, is delivered through the catheter and positioned within the AAA, excluding the weakened portion of the aorta from blood flow.
Once properly positioned, the graft is expanded using a balloon or self-expanding mechanism to secure it in place and seal off the aneurysm.
Contrast dye is injected to visualize the graft’s position and ensure proper sealing of the aneurysm while avoiding leakage or blockages in adjacent arteries.
The catheter is removed, and the groin incision is closed with sutures or a closure device.
Patients are closely monitored in a recovery area for any immediate complications, such as bleeding or changes in blood pressure.
AAA endovascular graft repair is primarily utilized in vascular surgery, with vascular surgeons specializing in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Additionally, interventional radiologists and interventional cardiologists may also be involved in performing or assisting with the procedure, particularly in cases where a multidisciplinary approach is required.
